CapMan offers a wide range of internship opportunities across various sectors, including infrastructure, real estate, natural capital, private equity, legal, and business intelligence.
“We have a unique culture. We are approachable, and we have a flat hierarchy. We put in the work, but with a purpose.”
This is how Andreas Nyberg, Head of HR at CapMan, describes CapMan both as a company and as an employer.
Andreas is still relatively new at CapMan, having joined in September 2024. Before joining, he worked as a Senior Director, Organisational Strategy Leader at Nasdaq. During his 17-year career within HR, Andreas has experienced how human resources have become an integral part of business strategy.
“As part of our overall strategy for the upcoming years, winning teams and building nimble operations are of high priority. One of the initiatives that includes both elements is the internship hiring program.”
The new program retains CapMan’s unique and approachable culture while also establishing a structure for internships. For example, all CapMan interns will be invited to a joint onboarding week, regardless of their location.
“We will invite all interns for practical onboarding sessions, on topics such as data security, brand awareness, etc. Our interns will get introductions to all of our investment teams and strategies, so that they not only see their own teams, but also what the other teams are working on, and how everything links together.”
Andreas believes that by bringing everyone together, CapMan can build a community in which all interns feel connected to one another, even when working with different teams.
Different sectors, same key mindset
What kinds of internship opportunities does CapMan offer then?
Each investment team at CapMan works towards different segments or markets, Andreas explains. As an intern at CapMan, you have various sectors to work with, such as real estate, infrastructure, natural capital, and private equity strategies.
The investment teams are supported by the group functions, which at CapMan are referred to as the Platform, including among others legal, fund management, finance, risk, and communication.
“Basically, the platform organisation supports all of our investment teams to draw on specific expertise, in a scalable way.”
Internship periods vary depending on the teams and their needs, making it more flexible for students. It can vary from a year working full-time to just a few hours or days a week.
Our interns will gain different expertise depending on the team in which they will be working.
“For example, everyone understands what investments are, but at CapMan it is very much about active ownership in all our assets we invest in. For us, active ownership is finding creative ways to create sustainable growth.”
Sustainable growth is a key mindset for CapMan’s actions and existence. For example, in real estate, sustainable growth means value creation of an asset so that it will be worth more by being in better condition, and having the potential to grow further, while positively impacting the overall society.
Expected and allowed to do meaningful work
Daria Andreeva first joined the company as an Investment Intern in the CapMan Real Estate team. After a year, she transitioned into an Analyst position, gradually taking on more responsibility in the full investment process. Her work now spans from screening and evaluating deal flow to preparing investment materials, and from supporting deal execution to monitoring the performance of the existing portfolio.
“CapMan has helped me grow professionally by giving me hands-on experience in private equity real estate and the opportunity to see different phases of the investment process. I’ve learned that responsibility comes with showing initiative, and I was entrusted with significant responsibilities early on”, she says.
Like Daria, all CapMan interns are working on real projects. They are, for example, conducting financial modelling, performing due diligence screenings, revising pitch decks, marketing materials, and contracts, as well as creating training materials.
“They are an integrated part of the business and are expected and allowed to do meaningful work”, Andreas Nyberg emphasises.
For CapMan, interns bring in new perspectives and fresh ideas for how to do things more efficiently. For interns, on the other hand, CapMan offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of private assets business in the Nordics.
Sharing learnings
When Andreas looks back on his own career, he reflects on the importance of having a supportive mentor who can provide challenging tasks and encourage independent thinking.
“For me, the best thing I’ve learned at CapMan is that good ideas aren’t shut down regardless of where they come from. The best ideas usually win. I think that is very refreshing”, he says.
Daria shares Andreas’s experience. Working at CapMan has accelerated her learning and helped strengthen her technical expertise.
“On a personal level, I’ve realised that I enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, and that I thrive when given both responsibility and the freedom to contribute ideas.”
Today, Daria day-to-day work includes financial modelling, preparing materials for investment decisions, and supporting due diligence processes.
Each year, a few interns join the team, and Daria has also helped new interns in her team with the onboarding.
“It takes me back to when I was in that position, and everything felt completely new. Now I get to help with things I didn’t even know myself back then. I’ve learned a lot along the way, and being able to share that with someone at the beginning of their journey feels rewarding.”
