Located a few kilometres east of the Turku central business district, Skanssi has fast become a local favourite. From a dog park and sportswear store to your everyday supermarket and not so everyday bitcoin ATM, Skanssi’s visitors run errands, shop for essentials and enjoy leisure activities all under one roof – in Europe’s only triple LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified shopping centre.
Encouraging ecological behaviours
When investing into Skanssi and its development, CapMan wanted to ensure the property becomes not only a national forerunner in ecological operations, but a European benchmark. Skanssi is only one of two European shopping centres to receive a Platinum LEED certification. Powered completely by renewable electricity, it’s also the first Finnish shopping centre to install solar panels and one of the few commercial properties with a bee yard.
“During the certification process the whole personnel and the firms operating in Skanssi have accumulated significant knowledge and we can make use of this competence in our future projects,” says Juhani Erke, Partner and Head of CapMan Real Estate Finland.

Ecological behaviour of both visitors and tenants is encouraged and made easy. Staff are given a green handbook to guide conduct, as complimentary charging stations for electric vehicles and recycling units support Skanssi’s trendsetter position in sustainable operations. “Skanssi’s clients appreciate our green values and are happy to shop in an ecological shopping centre,” Erke concludes.
