Transforming and developing investments for a sustainable future

As a leading player in private asset management in the Nordic region, CapMan enhances and transforms real estate, infrastructure, forestry, and private companies into more sustainable assets that generate long-term value. Its holistic approach creates benefits for both investors and society.

“For us, sustainability isn’t just about meeting regulatory requirements. We see it as a key to building the businesses and infrastructure of the future while driving economic growth and sustainable value creation,” says Pia Kåll, CEO of CapMan.

At the Sustainable Finance event hosted by Dagens Industri and Aktuell Hållbarhet in Stockholm, Pia shared the purpose behind CapMan’s sustainability efforts. We see sustainability as a way to drive better business and generate stronger financial returns. It’s not about choosing between sustainability and competitiveness; it’s about integrating them.”

From analysis to transformation

CapMan’s sustainability strategy is based on the principle of double materiality, which means looking at both how sustainability issues affect investments and how investments impact society and the environment. This approach helps identify key risks and opportunities across real estate, infrastructure, forestry, and portfolio companies, supporting both value creation and positive sustainability outcomes.

“We analyse the necessary measures to elevate an investment to the next level and implement solutions tailored to each asset,” explains Anna Olsson, Head of Sustainability at CapMan.

CapMan establishes robust sustainability practices across its properties, companies, and infrastructure assets, ensuring that sustainability measures are embedded in business plans. As an active owner, often holding majority stakes and board positions, CapMan has a strong ability to guide companies toward more sustainable business models.

Science-based climate targets

In 2023, CapMan had its Science Based Targets validated, making climate action a central part of the company’s strategy. The goal is to reduce the carbon footprint across our entire investment portfolio while supporting portfolio companies in setting and achieving their own GHG emissions reductions targets.

“Climate targets are relatively straightforward to work with because we know what actions need to be taken. The key is breaking them down into smaller steps for each property and company. However, when it comes to nature as a whole, the process becomes more complex,” says Anna. “CapMan is now working on understanding nature dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities across its investments, to transition its investments to safeguard nature.”

Sustainability in action: from infrastructure to renewable energy

CapMan also invests in companies and assets driving the green transition. One example is Skarta, which focuses on solar power and renewable energy. By aligning the company with the EU Taxonomy and conducting human rights due diligence, CapMan demonstrates how responsible investment management can contribute to a more sustainable future.

“It’s about adopting a holistic view of investments and ensuring that sustainability efforts become an integral part of business planning,” concludes Anna.

CapMan continues to lead the way in creating a more sustainable investment landscape, actively driving the transformation of real estate, infrastructure, forestry, and companies. By combining analysis, strategy, and concrete action, CapMan fosters a future where both sustainability and economic interests thrive.
